There Is More Than One Way To Skin A Cat

I’m serious when I say that I don’t like to lose.

Since I have been playing this game for a long time now, I have learned how to get creative so I can avoid it too.

That is the little Bench Top hydraulic press I built from scratch a couple of years ago.

It was juuuuust barely tall enough to get the spindle pushed out of the back bearing.

Once I got it out, I flipped the housing over and pressed the back bearing out.

Unfortunately there was no way that I was getting the front bearing off the spindle with it though so a little pondering, a little digging around, some fiddle farting and some determination later,

That’s right bitch, come to Daddy.

I win again.

So now tomorrow, after I get finished having someone scrape and poke around inside my mouth with some sharp metal pointy things, I can get back here and get that housing sanded down, primered and painted.

Then I get to start pondering and fiddle farting again and figure out how I am going to get the new bearings in it.

There is no doubt in my mind that I will figure something out.

Refer to my opening statement.

  1. Same version as the puller only in reverse. Big piece of thread-all, large area washers or a pieces of plate with a hole centered in them that’s bigger than the bearings, couple nuts and bob’s yer mother’s brother. Poor man’s bearing press. Shoot me an email & I’ll send a pic of the one I have in my box for clarity.

  2. Piece of Sch40 iron or steel (or even pvc if it’s not a real tight fit) in the right diameter as the inner race. Barring the right size pipe, 2 halves of a piece that’s close, one on each side wrapped with wire or something to hold them together as you press the bearing home. Horrible Fright has cheap bearing and seal seaters as well…if you have a gift certificate or 2 lying around.

  3. Could you turn the puller and nuts backwards on your bearing puller to press the new bearing back? I did that once when I didn’t have something to press and it worked.
