  1. I had this great Metal Trades teacher in High School. We took the low ratio gearbox off of an old radial engine stand, attached a chuck and electric motor to it, and attached it to a heavy I beam and added a moving chuck at the other end. It would make the perfect twist in 1/2 ” square bar stock which we would then make into ornamental iron such as burglar bars for window and doors. I used to work for him on the side after school going around town installing that stuff. He was the only teacher that I stayed in touch with till the day he died and all the lessons still live on in my head. Even though I went to Engineering school I tell people that there are a lot of ways to learn things and they don’t teach them all in school (anymore).
