Fuckin’ Car troubles Again

Bizarre electrical troubles to be more precise.

Here we fuckin’ go again.

The last El Camino I had before this one was apparently owned by a tweaker and I spent the better part of a year identifying, trouble shooting and repairing electrical problems literally from the fucking head lights, all the way through the car, to the tail lights.

It was a nightmare.

yesterday on my way to work this one started some weird shit. When I shut the key off, the engine stopped but all the accessories stayed on and wouldn’t shut off.

I got to work and it did the same thing. I finally shut the fan and other crap off manually and ran inside.

Of course, at 11:00 when I got off work, the battery was dead.

I got a jump from a buddy and hauled ass home.

Did I mention it was in the 20’s last night?

Yeah.

All the way home the charging system gauge showed no charge and about six blocks from the house the headlights were so dim I could barely see the road.

 

Today I threw an ignition switch in it and what a motherfucking cock sucker of a job that was.

It’s still not all back together and the fucker is still acting weird.

I am beginning to suspect that the voltage regulator inside the alternator is taking a shit.

After I swapped out the ignition switch the charging system started working again but the blower motor stays on when I turn the key off, sometimes. Then the charging system shows it ain’t working, then it does. Then everything works and then it doesn’t.

Bizarre shit Maynard.

If the regulator is sticking then that might explain some of this shit.

 

I will find out tomorrow because I just threw the fucker back together enough to get back and forth to work again.

I will take my trickle charger and get close enough to the building to run an extension cord out to it.

Then I will disconnect the battery, hook the charger to it and go to work.

That way the fucking battery won’t be dead and it will have enough charge to get me home even if the alternator decides not to work.

 

Oh the joys of owning old beaters.

I’ll figure the damn thing out eventually, the timing could have been better with Christmas just a few days away and me having all fucking kinds of running around yet to do.

  1. Your stuff has timing just about like mine. This morning the controller board in my furnace took a shit. (Relay for the inducer fan quit working.) Locals won’t sell a civilian a board; put one on order with Amazon. It’ll be here next Wednesday. Got a jury rig in place until then.

    Depending on what year we’re talking about here, (external regulator?) it could be a shorted diode in the alternator that’s feeding your accessory circuits with the switch off.

  2. I finally got tired of chasing electrical problems in the 72 C-10 I had. I got a Painless Performance GMC wiring harness from Summit Racing and it cleared everything up. It took me and my son most of a weekend to take out the old and wire in the new one.

  4. Have you checked for wires rubbed bare near frame, block. I have had that happen more than once and it ended draining the battery until i found the short. Doesn’t take much

    • It was the alternator, in the engine compartment, with a bad regulator. The scene of the crime has been investigated and the guilty party has been dealt with harshly.
